"Strength" is a term used in engineering to denote how much stress a material can handle. In tension, it won't matter how much material there is, it's strength will always be some number with units of force/area.
The amount of force it can handle is determined by the thickness. If a material has a certain strength, in force/area, if you increase the area, you increase the amount of force it can take. We would call this "load capacity" or just "capacity" rather than "strength", one refers to force, the other to stress.
