I'm trying to find the material designation of API 5L X60 in ASME standards. If there is no equivalent, then the closest permissible material for welding purposes would be appreciated. I have to weld the two materials together, but the customer provided only the X60 and we are an ASME certified shop.
Answer
Without knowing the full design considerations it is difficult to give an answer but in general I would think ASTM A106B would come close. It is a very common mild Steel pipe used in many pressure vessels. You would have to check the wall thickness to be sure it fits the design requirements.
I have seen pipe stamped from the mill with a combined marking for api 5L and a106 so I am sure they are very similar in terms of welding requirements.
While a nice choice, I consulted a metallurgist I knew who let me know that SA-516 Gr. 70 would also work. I myself was leaning toward SA-106-C or SA-572 Gr. 60. Thank you for your help though.
