Hardenability and main uses of 16Mo3 steel steel plate

16Mo3 steel is a high-speed tool steel with good hardenability and wear resistance. It is through ferritic + pearlite structure, compared with high carbon and high chromium steel, has high strength, tempering resistance and thermal fatigue performance, and has higher machining performance. Because of the ultra-fine grain structure, it is necessary to adopt a larger heat treatment specification than HRc52 when using, in order to ensure better comprehensive mechanical properties. Since 16Mo3 steel has no special requirement for service temperature, its hardenability is better than that of HRc52 steel. The tempering stability of 16Mo3 steel is better than that of HRc52 steel. 16Mo3 steel has less tendency to appear network carbide during overheating or cold hardening. 1. Compared with 10 Cr and 11 CrWSi steel, the steel has higher hardenability and wear resistance. 2. The steel has good wear resistance and toughness, poor cold deformation plasticity. 3. The steel has little tendency to overheat during quenching.
The quenching temperature of 16Mo3 steel is generally in 1050~1100℃, large workpiece can be heated in 900~1080℃, medium and small workpiece is heated in 650~750℃, the cooling speed of the surface is slower, and the heart is faster. The higher the heating temperature is, the more Austenitic volume is in the surface layer and the larger the deformation is. The hardness is also greater after quenching.
After quenching, 16Mo3 steel should be tempered at 800~900℃ or cooled with the furnace (usually cooled with the furnace). The purpose of tempering is to allow the steel to maintain a certain hardness and wear resistance. However, because of its high carbon content, when tempering temperature is too high, bainite structure will appear, so that its toughness is greatly reduced. It is also possible to overburn and produce cracks.
16Mo3 steel does not need to be tempered again after quenching (except for special requirements).
16Mo3 steel after quenching oil cooling or water cooling should also fully eliminate the internal stress (general oil cooling).
16Mo3 steel is widely used as alloy structural steel in petroleum, chemical industry and shipbuilding industry. It has good welding performance, anti-bite performance, high fatigue strength and good corrosion resistance, etc. Adding trace elements boron and sulfur to 16Mo3 steel makes its mechanical properties improve.
16Mo3 steel is American Petroleum Institute standard ASMEB28.1-1996 designated as alloy tool steel for hot working die (API 5L), its grade 18-4-0, 18-4 three grades, can be used to manufacture and heat treatment of a variety of die. 16Mo3 steel has the advantages of good stamping formability, high work hardening rate and high fatigue strength after tempering. But the cutting performance is not good, low temperature toughness is poor. After heat treatment, it is generally used for parts requiring high stress, impact load and medium hardness.
