How do I calculate the weight of a steel pipe? steel plate

Question:

Im trying to figure out how to calculate the weight of a steel pipe, I have the outside diameter (8.75") the wall thickness(.321") and the height(40") I have a chart of stock material weight, steel being 490lb/cu ft. a step by step explanation would be cool, I will need to do this on a test .

Anwser:

easiest is to use the secret formula:
(O.D. minus wall thickness) times wall thickness times 10.68 gives the weight per foot of steel pipe

In your example, (8.75 minus .321) times .321 times 10.68, or 28.897 lbs per foot
Your 40" section weighs 96.32 lbs

However, it is likely you are dealing with a section of 8" schedule 40 pipe which is actually 8.625" O.D. with a .322 wall giving a (nominal) weight of 28.55 lbs/ft or 95.17 lbs.
