45Mn steel is a relatively successful new type of steel to replace 40Cr steel. It has high strength, hardness, wear resistance and good toughness. The hardenability of 45Mn steel is slightly higher than that of 40Cr, and the critical hardenable diameter in oil is Up to 18-33mm; good machinability after normalizing, good performance in cold drawing, thread rolling, tapping and forging, heat treatment, and grain growth, oxidation, decarburization tendency and quenching deformation tendency at high temperature are all better Small; but 45Mn steel has temper brittleness, and the tempering stability is slightly worse than that of 40Cr steel.
45Mn steel is generally used in the quenched and tempered state, and the operating temperature ranges from -20 to 425 °C.
It can replace 40Cr steel to make quenched and tempered parts with medium and small sections, such as automobile half shafts, steering shafts, worms, spline shafts and machine tool spindles, gears, etc.
In addition, 45Mn steel can also replace 40Cr steel to make parts with larger cross-section such as Φ250-320mm hoist intermediate shaft. This steel can also be used instead of 40CrNi steel when making smaller parts.
