EN S355JR steel is a structural grade steel with a minimum yield strength of 355 Mpa. The mainly application of EN S355JR steel is in the engineering and construction industries. From those conditions, you may remember another ASTM steel grade. Yes, it is ASTM A572 Gr 50, the EN S355JR equivalent ASTM steel grade.
ASTM A572 Gr 50 has very close chemical composition and mechanical properties to that of EN S355JR steel.
EN S355JR equivalent ASTM steel grade and EN S355JR steel chemical composition:
Grade | C (t≤16mm) | Si | Mn | P | S |
EN S355JR | 0.27 max | 0.6 | 1.70 max | 0.045 max | 0.045 max |
ASTM A572 Gr 50 | 0.23 max | 0.40 max | 1.35 max | 0.04 max | 0.05 max |
EN S355JR equivalent ASTM steel grade and EN S355JR steel mechanical properties:
Grade | Yield strength ReH/(N/mm2) (t≤16mm) min | Tensile strength Rm/(N/mm2) (3mm≤t≤16mm) | Elongation A/% (3mm≤t≤40mm) min | Charpy V test
Temperature/℃ | Impact energy (Longitudinal)/J min
EN S355JR | 355 | 470-630 | 22 | 20 | 27 |
ASTM A572 Gr 50 | 345 | 450 | 18 | - | - |
From above tables, we find that ASTM A572 Gr 50 chemical composition can meet chemical composition requirements of EN S355JR. The strength of ASTM A572 Gr 50 down limitation is lower than that of EN S355JR. But in actual production, most ASTM A572 Gr 50 strength can meet strength requirements of EN S355JR also. On the other hand, it reminds us though ASTM A572 Gr 50 is EN S355JR equivalent ASTM steel grade, it does not mean they are totally same.
