Both EN S355JR and ASTM A572 Grade 50 steel are most popular high strength low alloy steel. Actually, A572 Grade 50 is EN S355JR ASTM equivalent steel grade. While they are under different technical standards, EN10025-2 is for EN S355JR and ASTM A572 / A572 M for A572 Grade 50.
Below we mainly make a comparison from two aspects: chemical composition and mechanical property:
EN S355JR ASTM equivalent steel A572 Grade 50 chemical composition:
Grade | C (t≤16mm) | Si | Mn | P | S |
A572 Grade 50 | 0.23 max | 0.40 max | 1.35 max | 0.04 max | 0.05 max |
S355JR | 0.27 max | 0.6 | 1.70 max | 0.045 max | 0.045 max |
EN S355JR ASTM equivalent steel A572 Grade 50 mechanical properties:
Grade | Yield strength ReH/(N/mm2) (t≤16mm) min | Tensile strength Rm/(N/mm2) (3mm≤t≤16mm) | Elongation A/% (3mm≤t≤40mm) min |
A572 Grade 50 | 345 | 450 | 18 |
S355JR | 355 | 470-630 | 22 |
For chemical composition, the five main chemical elements limit of EN S355JR ASTM equivalent steel A572 Grade 50 is within the specification range of EN S355JR. But the chemical elements limit of EN S355JR may exceed limit of A572 Grade 50.
For mechanical properties, EN S355JR tensile strength is 470-630Mpa,yield strength above 345Mpa. Min.tensile strength of ASTM A572 Grade 50 is 450Mpa, yield strength is above 345Mpa. Generally speaking, they can meet demands of each other. But some A572 Grade 50 steel can not meet the strength requirements of EN S355JR.
