Effect of chemical composition on properties of A36 steel steel plate

The mechanical properties of structural A36 steel are determined by its chemical composition. The main chemical elements of carbon structural steel have the following effects on the properties of A36 steel:

Carbon is the main element affecting the strength of carbon steel and alloy steel. Generally speaking, every 0.01% increase in carbon, the strength can increase about 3.5mpa, but also accompanied by the increase of hardness, ductility reduction, reduced gap toughness, poor weldability, more prone to aging and other problems. Therefore, the carbon content of A36 steel is generally limited. The carbon content of structural steel is usually not higher than 0.3%, or lower, which mainly depends on the content of other elements and the requirements for weldability and notch toughness of A36 steel.

A36 steel with copper content up to 0.35% can significantly improve its atmospheric corrosion resistance. Before the copper content increases to 1.0%, with the increase of copper, the atmospheric corrosion resistance of carbon structural steel continues to increase, although the growth rate is not very rapid. Copper can increase the strength and increase the fatigue limit proportionally. However, with the increase of copper content, the ductility, notch toughness and weldability of A36 steel will be reduced.

Manganese can increase the strength, hardenability, fatigue limit, notch toughness and corrosion resistance of A36 steel. It reduces ductility and fracture transition temperatures and can hinder aging. In addition, it can counteract thermal brittleness caused by sulfur, and for this reason manganese content should be 3-8 times greater than sulfur content, depending on the type of steel. But manganese can reduce the solderability of A36 steel.

Silicon can increase the strength, notch toughness and hardenability of A36 steel. It reduces ductility transition temperature and weldability. Sulfur phosphorus is a harmful substance, the lower its content, the better the performance of A36 steel.
