16Mo3 steel is a kind of high-speed tool steel, has good cold working plasticity and hot working properties, heat treatment deformation is small, do not need to do conditioning treatment, is widely used in the manufacture of large mold requirements of good comprehensive performance. 16Mo3 steel is also a special kind of carburizing steel. Because of its high hardenability and good tempering stability, it is often used to manufacture parts with higher quenching conditions, larger sizes and complex shapes.
16Mo3 steel in the long-term use or storage process, there will be some surface defects, such as cracks, stripping, etc., which will lead to the decline of hardness, stress corrosion resistance. In order to ensure good mechanical properties and service life of 16Mo3 steel in long-term use, surface defects should be avoided as far as possible in the heat treatment process.
For 16Mo3 steel parts with high strength and hardness, obvious microstructure changes and stress corrosion cracking tendency may occur after heat treatment. In order to avoid these defects, attention should be paid to the following matters during heat treatment:
(1) Before aging treatment of 16Mo3 steel, it should be annealed or normalized to eliminate surface defects;
(2) quenching and low temperature tempering must be isothermal aging treatment;
(3) After hot treatment of martensite, aging treatment should be carried out in cold to room temperature to prevent cold brittleness;
(4) overheating should be avoided in the process of processing.
16Mo3 steel is one of the representative varieties of high speed tool steel. Compared with high silicon quenched steel and 45-50 CrMnTi (high quality) steel, it has higher thermal stability and its performance is better than the latter and better than the former. In addition, due to the lower carbon content of 16Mo3 steel, its welding performance is worse than that of high-silicon quenched steel. But under tempering condition, it still has good comprehensive mechanical properties and surface hardening properties.
