Duplex 2205 has equivalents UNS S32205, S3180 and 1.4462. This material is a nitrogen duplex stainless steel. “Duplex” describes a family of stainless steels that are neither fully austenitic, like 304 stainless steel, nor purely ferritic, like 430 stainless. The structure of duplex 2205 consists of austenitic pools surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase. In the annealed condition, 2205 duplex contains approximately 40-50% ferrite. It has higher strength which is around twice that of SS 304 austenitic stainless steel. This leads to reduced plate thickness being used in fabrications reducing the weight which is of particular significance in items such as pressure vessels, storage tanks, and structural applications such as bridges.
This duplex stainless steel has good weldability in thin thickness. Its resistance to stress corrosion cracking of importance in many applications including hot water tanks, process plant, brewing tanks, and desallination plant. Uses of 2205 duplex steel should be limited to temperature below 600° F. Extended elevated temperature exposure can embrittle 2205 stainless. Duplex 2205 is mainly used in chemical processing industries, storage and transportation units of industries, pulp and paper digesters, liquor and paper machines. It is also highly suitable for application in marine environments.
