Material Characteristics
42CrMo steel belongs to ultra-high-strength steel, with high strength and toughness, hardenability is also good, no obvious tempering brittleness, tempering treatment has a high fatigue limit and resistance to multiple impacts, low-temperature impact toughness is good. The steel is suitable for the manufacture of large and medium-sized plastic molds requiring certain strength and toughness. Strength, high hardenability, good toughness, quenching deformation is small, high temperature has high creep strength and enduring strength. Used in the manufacture of 35CrMo steel requirements than the higher strength and tempering cross-section of larger forgings, such as locomotive traction with large gears, supercharger transmission gears, pressure vessel gears, rear axle, loaded with a great deal of connecting rods and spring clamps, but also can be used for 2000m below the oil drilling rod joints and salvage tools and can be used for bending machine molds and so on.
After tempering treatment has a high fatigue limit and resistance to multiple impacts, good low-temperature impact toughness, high creep strength and endurance strength at high temperatures. The steel is usually tempered and then surface quenched as a heat treatment program.

Process specification
Thermal processing specification
Heating temperature 1150 ~1200°C, start temperature 1130 ~1180°C, termination temperature > 850°C, slow cooling when φ> 50mm.
Normalizing specification
Normalizing temperature 850~900°C, air cooling.
High temperature tempering specification
Tempering temperature 680~700°C, air-cooled.
Quenching and tempering specification
Preheating temperature 680~700°C, quenching temperature 840~880°C, oil-cooled, tempering temperature 580°C, water-cooled or oil-cooled, hardness ≤217HBW.
Sub-temperature quenching and toughening treatment specifications
Quenching temperature 900°C, tempering temperature 560°C, hardness (37±1) HRC
Induction hardening and tempering specifications
Quenching temperature 900°C, tempering temperature 150~180°C, hardness 54~60HRC.
