What is the difference between ASTM A537 CL1 and A516 Gr.70? steel plate

ASTM A516 / SA516 plate material is the standard specification for pressure vessel fabrication.  ASTM A537 / SA537 plate material is heat-treated, carbon-manganese silicon steel.

ASTM A537 Class 1

A537 Class 1 is normalized, heat treated and displays greater yield and tensile strength that the more common A516 grades. Ideal for Pressure Vessels, Boilers, API 650, and API 620 storage tanks in the Oil & Gas and Petrochemical Industries.

ASTM A516 Gr. 70

A516 Grade 70 plate material is suitable for low temperature application pressure vessels and industrial boilers.

A516 Grade 70 plate material is suitable for lower than ambient temperature applications. A516 Grade 70 offers greater tensile and yield strength than grade 65 and can operate at even lower temperatures. This material is also used extensively for Pipe Shoes, Gussets and Base Plates etc.

The main differences between ASTM A537 and ASTM A516 lie in their intended applications, mechanical properties, and specific requirements:

Intended Applications:

ASTM A516: Carbon steel plates primarily used for pressure vessel fabrication for moderate and lower temperature service.

ASTM A537: Heat-treated carbon-manganese-silicon steel plates primarily used in the construction of pressurized tanks and vessels for low-temperature service.

Strength Levels:

ASTM A516: Grades 55, 60, 65, and 70 with varying yield strength and tensile strength levels to suit different service conditions.

ASTM A537: Class 1 and Class 2 with higher yield and tensile strength compared to A516 grades, specifically designed for low-temperature applications where notch toughness is critical.

Notch Toughness:

ASTM A516: Good notch toughness properties are required for all grades, but specific requirements vary depending on the grade.

ASTM A537: Designed with enhanced notch toughness properties, especially important for low-temperature service applications to prevent brittle fracture.

Chemical Composition:

Both specifications have specific chemical composition requirements to ensure proper mechanical properties and performance under designated service conditions.

Temperature Range:

ASTM A516: Suitable for a range of temperatures depending on the grade.

ASTM A537: Specifically designed for low-temperature service applications where the material must maintain its toughness at sub-zero temperatures.

In summary, while both ASTM A516 and ASTM A537 are carbon steel pressure vessel plates with similar chemical compositions, A537 is specifically designed for low-temperature service applications, offering higher strength and better notch toughness compared to A516 grades. The choice between the two specifications depends on the specific requirements of the pressure vessel application, including operating temperature, notch toughness considerations, and mechanical properties needed to ensure safe and reliable performance under service conditions.
