What are the 4 types of stainless steel? steel plate

Stainless steel is broadly categorized into several types based on their crystalline structure and alloying elements. The four main types of stainless steel are:

Austenitic Stainless Steel:

Composition: Contains high levels of chromium (typically 18% or more) and nickel (usually 8% or more).

Properties: Non-magnetic, excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and weldability.

Common Grades: 304 (most common), 316, 321, 347.

Ferritic Stainless Steel:

Composition: Contains chromium (usually 10.5% or more) and little to no nickel.

Properties: Magnetic, good corrosion resistance in certain environments, relatively lower strength and toughness compared to austenitic grades.

Common Grades: 430, 409, 439.

Martensitic Stainless Steel:

Composition: Contains high levels of chromium (typically 12% to 14%) and moderate levels of carbon (0.1% to 1.2%).

Properties: Magnetic, good hardness and wear resistance, but lower corrosion resistance compared to austenitic and ferritic grades.

Common Grades: 410, 420, 440C.

Duplex Stainless Steel:

Composition: Combines characteristics of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, with higher chromium (19% to 32%) and sometimes added molybdenum (up to 5%).

Properties: Offers a balanced mix of strength and corrosion resistance, good weldability, and higher resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Common Grades: 2205 (most common), 2507, Zeron 100.

Each type of stainless steel has specific applications based on its properties, such as corrosion resistance, strength, formability, and cost considerations. The choice of stainless steel type depends on factors like environmental conditions, required mechanical properties, and manufacturing requirements.
