ASTM A537 is a standard specification for pressure vessel plates, heat-treated, carbon-manganese-silicon steel. These plates are primarily used in pressure vessel applications, where high strength and resistance to pressure are critical. There are two classes under this specification: Class 1 (CL1) and Class 2 (CL2).
Tensile Strength:
Class 1 (CL1): Typically has a lower tensile strength range, generally between 485 MPa to 620 MPa (70 to 90 ksi).
Class 2 (CL2): Has a higher tensile strength range, typically between 550 MPa to 690 MPa (80 to 100 ksi).
Heat Treatment:
Class 1 (CL1): Plates are supplied in a normalized condition.
Class 2 (CL2): Plates are supplied in a quenched and tempered condition, which results in improved mechanical properties.
Yield Strength:
Class 1 (CL1): Typically has a minimum yield strength of around 345 MPa (50 ksi).
Class 2 (CL2): Typically has a minimum yield strength of around 415 MPa (60 ksi).
Applications:
Class 1 (CL1): Used in applications where moderate strength is sufficient.
Class 2 (CL2): Used in applications requiring higher strength and toughness, making it suitable for more demanding environments.
ASTM A537 Class 1 is preferred for standard pressure vessel applications where moderate strength and toughness are adequate.
ASTM A537 Class 2 is used in situations requiring higher mechanical strength and enhanced toughness due to its higher tensile and yield strength, as well as its quenched and tempered heat treatment.
The choice between Class 1 and Class 2 depends on the specific requirements of the pressure vessel or structural application, particularly concerning strength and toughness.
