ASTM A36 steel is the most common type of low carbon steel. It is suitable for most building components, including columns, beams. The ductility of ASTM A36 steel does not allow alloys to be used as cables or as reinforcing bars. Nevertheless, most other uses are perfect for ASTM A36 steel.
ASTM A36 steel mechanical properties:
Mechanical Properties | Imperial | Metric |
Yield Tensile Strength | 36,300 psi | 250 MPa |
Ultimate Tensile Strength | 58,000 – 79,800 psi | 400 – 550 MPa |
Elongation at Break (in 50 mm) | 23.00% | 23.00% |
Elongation at Break (in 200 mm) | 20.00% | 20.00% |
Bulk Modulus (Typical for steel) | 20,300 ksi | 140 GPa |
Modulus of Elasticity | 29,000 ksi | 200 GPa |
Poissons Ratio | 0.26 | 0.26 |
The ultimate tensile strength of ASTM A36 steel is 58,000 psi to 79,800 psi. Accurate ultimate tensile strength is determined by a variety of factors, such as chemical composition and molding methods. ASTM A36 steel is relatively ductile and can be extended to about 20% of its original length in tensile test. Its ductility and strength also give it excellent impact strength at room temperature.
