Comparison and selection of ASME SA283 Gr.C mild steel and alloy steel steel plate

In many cases, we prefer alloy steel not ASME SA283 Gr.C mild steel. There are many reasons.

First, the hardenability of SA283 Gr.C common carbon steel is poor. For large parts with high requirements, universal ASME SA283 Gr.C carbon steel is certainly not applicable. Alloy steel has high hardenability, which can be used to make large section and complex shape parts.

Second, the high temperature strength of ASME SA283 Gr.C mild steel is low, and the strength and red hardness of SA283 Gr.C ordinary carbon steel will be reduced rapidly when the ASME SA283 Gr.C mild steel is used at more than 200℃. The alloy steel has good stability after tempering. It's red hardness is good and can work at a higher temperature.

Third, ASME SA283 Gr.C mild steel can not get good comprehensive properties. For example, when quenching and tempering is used to try to achieve good comprehensive performance, if we want to ensure higher strength, the toughness is low. If we want to ensure good toughness, then the strength is low. This is due to the poor tempering stability of SA283 Gr.C common carbon steel. Therefore, the comprehensive performance of the SA283 Gr.C mild steel is far worse than that of the alloy steel, that is, the alloy steel has a good strong toughness.

Forth, ASME SA283 Gr.C mild steel do not have special properties, such as high temperature hardness or stiffness, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, special electric and magnetic properties. They cannot be achieved in SA283 Gr.C carbon steel or mild steel, and only alloy steel can be used to meet above requirements.

ASME SA283 Gr.C mild steel also has some advantages. For example, ASME SA283 Grade C mild steel can get a lot of performance that is required in many industrial production by changing its carbon content and conducting proper heat treatment. Due to the low cost, easy production and good processing performance, ASME SA283 Gr.C mild steel is still the most widely used steel material in the industry, accounting for more than 80% of the total steel consumption.
