What is the difference between steel grade AH36 and steel grade A36 steel plate

For the difference between steel grade AH36 and steel grade A36, there are 2 conditions.

First condition, steel grade AH36 and steel grade A36 is totally 2 different steel species. Steel grade A36 is under ASTM A36/A36 mild steel standard. While steel grade AH36 is under ASTM A131/A131M shipbuilding steel standard. Steel grade A36 is only general strength steel, while steel grade AH36 is high strength steel.

Second condition, steel grade AH36 and steel grade A36 is same, the steel grade A36 is just short for steel grade AH36. The shipbuilding steel is produced according to the requirements of classification societies.

In DNV rules, steel grade AH36 is named as NV A36.
In GL rules, steel grade AH36 is named as GL A36.Note that DNV and GL is merge now.
In BV rules, steel grade AH36 is named as BV AH36.
In KR rules, steel grade AH36 is named as RA 36.
In ABS rules, steel grade AH36 is named as ABS A36, a lot of people is accustomed to express as ABS AH36 also.
In RINA rules, steel grade AH36 is named as RINA AH36.
In NK rules, steel grade AH36 is named as KA36.
In DNV rules, steel grade AH36 is named as NV A36.

For such condition, even the clients write A36, usually it comes with certain classification society, such as ABS, LR, BV, etc. If you are not clear whether the client needs A36 high strength shipbuilding steel or A36 general strength mild steel, please must confirm with the client first.
